There are some very important factors which you must consider before buying a used truck in Nigeria.

  1. Identify the type of truck you want– it is quite important that you identify the type of truck that you want to buy. This is solely dependent on the purpose which you intend using the truck for. The purpose of the truck will determine the capacity which you must buy else you might eventually get a truck that is not suitable for what you need it for and this will inevitably worn out the truck which will require that you pay exorbitant charges to fix the truck overt-time. Just like with any used vehicle purchase, the smart first move when you’re buying a used truck is to do your homework. You’ll want to look at your budget, of course, but also be realistic about what your requirements for your truck are

There are different types of trucks which you can consider depending on what you need it for

  1. Full-sized Pickup Trucks– These are the strong work horses of the truck world. They are larger and more rugged and they ride higher off the ground than compacts do. They are typically referred to as 1500-series
  2. Heavy-duty Trucks– these carry designations such as 2500 or 3500 and are configured for carrying very serious loads and for hauling fifth-wheel trailers. These are bulky trucks for the most demanding chores

  1. Know Your Limits– As is the case with payload capacity, if you plan on towing, you’ll need to keep in mind the weight of your fully loaded trailer while you are shopping. The maximum towing capacity refers the to maximum weight a truck can safely tow. These specifications can usually be found in the owner’s manual. Today, many half-ton trucks will be more than enough for lighter towing needs. For example, newer regular cab half-ton F-150s have a 13,200 pound towing capacity. Anyone who routinely needs to tow shipments larger than this may need a heavy-duty model. Either way, it’s important understand your exact towing needs upfront. Exceeding cargo and towing specifications could have expensive and even dire consequences. Learn more about payloads and towing here.

  1. Fuel Capacity– Fuel efficiency is always an important factor to consider when purchasing a vehicle — especially a pickup truck. Oil prices are notoriously volatile and, at the time of this writing, gasoline prices are approaching a four-year high. While an extra mile or two per gallon may seem negligible, these costs add up over the lifetime of a vehicle. A more efficient pickup truck may appear to pay for itself in fuel savings, but there is a tradeoff between fuel economy and power
  2. Ask Questions – When shopping for a used pickup truck, it is imperative that you ask questions. Accident history, total number of owners, and even where the vehicle was previously registered are important pieces of information

Apart from these listed factors there are other factors which you must take note of before buying a used truck in Nigeria

  • Examine the truck only in daylight; even a well-lit lot will conceal defects and hamper a good inspection. You should also be on level ground in order to check the fluids correctly.

  • Start the engine. Make sure there are no knocks or thuds. These sounds may indicate a bad crankshaft or connecting-rod bearing, and both of them are costly repairs. All trucks should have a high idle setting. Fuel-injected engines automatically set theirs, carbureted engines will require applying some generous gas after starting to set the fast idle. If the idle does not seem right, have the engine checked by a mechanic.
  • Check each opening and body-panel joint for fit. Run your hand along the bottom of the doors and check for hard, rusty edges. Check the panels along the body from back to front; if they seem wavy or uneven, check them with a magnet (plastic body repairs won’t attract a magnet
  • If there are any raised spots on the roof, it means rust underneath. A more extended inspection of that area might be necessary if you want to buy that vehicle.
  • Look at the inside of each tire for signs of leakage (brake fluid, grease) and tread wear.
  • Drive the car at least 10 miles, shut the engine off, allow it to cool for a moment and then start it again. If the engine hesitates upon starting the second time, have it checked by a mechanic. Once started, accelerate very slowly to see if the transmission up shifts smoothly. Then check acceleration up to highway speed for engine smoothness. It’s always a good idea to take somebody with you on a test drive. The extra rider will be able to notice things like rattle and wind noise that the driver might be oblivious to.
  • At a safe place, try a panic stop to see if the brakes behave. Next, try a rough road to see if the shocks control after bouncing. Bounce the truck’s front end if it bounces more than three times, the shocks are worn.
  • Odometer (mileage meter) tampering is still commonly used to deceive buyers. Although gauges in new models are more difficult to tamper with, you should still be careful. If a seller tells you that his ’85 pickup has 35,000 miles on it, check for a few things, such as excessive wear on the brake pedal (if the comers are worn away, there’s a lot more than 35,000 miles on the truck); wear on the armrests and upholstery; and large numbers of pits on the windshield.

Once there are done, you can now proceed to the process of negotiating the price for the truck and also before doing this ensure that you have checked all the necessary documents before you make the final transaction.
